Castro & Martins Top Athletes

Swimmer Matt Castro and Melinda Martins of the Women’s Track and Field team have been selected as the Sacramento City College Athletes of the Month for March 2003.

Castro went undefeated in individual events during the month, while posting automatic state qualifier times in the 200m Butterfly (2:00.07), the 200m IM (1:57.27), the 100m (1:00.24) and the 200m Breaststroke (2:07.09), the 100m Butterfly (52.32) and the 400m IM (4:07.09). Castro is considered by many the swimmer to beat in the upcoming state meet in the 200m Breaststroke, the 400m IM and the 200m IM.

Martins placed fourth in the Nor-Cal championship for the Heptathlon which automatically qualifies her for the state championship meet. Her score of 3,268 points places her 8th on the SCC Top Ten List. Martins accomplished this while recovering from surgery for a broken nose sustained a week before the meet.

Panther Note:

Sacramento City College will hold their 9th annual Recognition of Athletic Excellence award ceremony on Tuesday May 6, 2003 at 7:00pm in the SCC Auditorium. The ceremony recognizes Sac City athletes who have excelled in their sports as well as the classroom.
